Türkiye is taking a bold step in strengthening its ties with Somalia by launching TRT Somali, a new addition to the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) global network. This initiative is set to transform the Somali-speaking media landscape by providing a fresh, authentic perspective that challenges outdated narratives of conflict and instability.

TRT Somali will serve as a platform for Somalis to share their own stories, celebrate their achievements, and address their challenges on their terms. Covering key sectors such as human capital development, agriculture, the blue economy, and energy, the channel will highlight Somalia’s immense potential and resilience.

Strengthening Historic Ties

The launch of TRT Somali is a reflection of the longstanding cultural, religious, and diplomatic ties between Türkiye and Somalia. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s landmark visit to Somalia, the first by a non-African leader in decades, was a turning point in the two nations’ relationship. Since then, Türkiye has played a crucial role in Somalia’s recovery by investing in humanitarian aid, infrastructure, security, and economic growth.

With deep-rooted cooperation in trade, defense, and education, the Türkiye-Somalia partnership has become a model of international collaboration. The launch of TRT Somali is another milestone in this journey, reinforcing a shared vision of progress and stability.

Changing the Narrative

For too long, global media coverage of Somalia has been dominated by themes of war, terrorism, and crisis. TRT Somali aims to change this by offering a more balanced, forward-looking portrayal of the country. From showcasing economic growth and security improvements to celebrating Somalia’s rich culture and entrepreneurial spirit, the channel will provide a much-needed counterbalance to prevailing stereotypes.

By expanding its media presence, Türkiye strengthens its global outreach, adding TRT Somali to its extensive network of over 45 international digital news channels, including TRT WORLD, TRT Français, TRT Arabi, TRT Balkan, TRT Russia, and TRT Deutsch. This expansion reflects Türkiye’s commitment to fostering cross-cultural dialogue and giving voice to underrepresented communities in global media.

More Than Just a Media Channel

TRT Somali is more than just a news platform—it represents a bridge between two nations bound by history and mutual respect. It will serve as a tool for empowering Somali voices, fostering national pride, and ensuring that Somalia’s story is told by Somalis to a global audience.

Following the success of TRT Afrika, which launched in 2023 to expand Türkiye’s media footprint across Africa, TRT Somali is another step in strengthening Türkiye’s engagement with the continent. With digital media rapidly shaping news consumption, both platforms are poised to become influential sources of credible African storytelling.

TRT Global: Redefining Media Coverage

TRT Somali operates under the umbrella of TRT Global, which remains dedicated to delivering accurate, real-time, and in-depth news coverage. Broadcasting in over 45 languages, TRT Global provides a credible alternative to often biased Western media narratives. By championing fact-based journalism and diverse perspectives, TRT Global continues to set new standards for fair and balanced reporting.

With the launch of TRT Somali, Türkiye is reaffirming its commitment to media inclusivity, international cooperation, and the empowerment of Somali voices. This initiative not only strengthens Türkiye’s global media presence but also deepens its historic partnership with Somalia, paving the way for a brighter and more connected future.
