Relations between Türkiye and Somalia have evolved into a strong and multifaceted partnership, underpinned by both diplomatic and emotional ties. The foundation of this bond dates back to 1993 when Türkiye first deployed troops to Somalia as part of the United Nations’ Second Somalia Operation (UNOSOM II), marking the beginning of Türkiye’s active role in promoting peace and stability in the region.

A defining moment came in 2011 when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, then prime minister, visited Somalia, signalling a new phase in bilateral cooperation.

Since that historic visit, Türkiye has been deeply committed to supporting Somalia in its reconstruction and development, addressing a wide range of critical needs across the country. The Turkish government has played a central role in strengthening Somalia’s security infrastructure, providing military training and support to build the Somali National Army and police forces.

In addition to enhancing security, Türkiye has focused on key sectors such as education and healthcare, establishing schools, hospitals, and medical facilities to improve the well-being of Somali citizens.

Türkiye has played a key role in Somalia’s development across multiple sectors, particularly in technology, defense, infrastructure, and humanitarian aid. The Turkish government has supported the strengthening of Somalia’s state institutions, offering technical assistance and training programs for public officials. Through its health, education, and infrastructure projects, Türkiye has enhanced state-society relations and contributed to the Somali people’s access to essential services.

A cornerstone of Türkiye’s support has been in defense, with the establishment of the TURKSOM Military academy in 2017, designed to bolster the Somali National Army’s capabilities. Türkiye has also provided vital military and police training, helping to strengthen Somalia’s security forces in the fight against terrorism.

In terms of infrastructure, Türkiye has made significant investments in modernizing key facilities such as Mogadishu’s Aden Adde international Airport and Port, along with the construction of new infrastructure projects, including a new airport. These initiatives have been pivotal in improving Somalia’s connectivity and economic development.

Türkiye’s humanitarian aid efforts, particularly in areas liberated from Al-Shabaab, have further solidified the bond between the two nations. Through organizations like the Turkish Red Crescent and TIKA, Türkiye has helped stabilize these regions and prevent them from falling under terrorist control.

Over the years, Türkiye’s relations with Somalia have expanded into a strategic partnership, with deepening economic, diplomatic, and educational ties. Turkish companies have revitalized Somalia’s economy through infrastructure projects, and Türkiye’s largest embassy in Mogadishu and Turkish Airlines’ regular flights have fostered increased trade and travel.

Looking ahead, Türkiye’s investment in Somalia’s development is set to grow, with new projects in infrastructure, maritime security, and energy, including the potential discovery of reserves by the Oruc Reis. As both countries work together on counter-terrorism efforts and security initiatives, the partnership is expected to continue thriving, offering significant opportunities for sustainable growth and regional stability.

In conclusion, the Türkiye-Somalia partnership has evolved into a model of cooperation that promises to deepen in the years to come, benefiting both nations and the broader region.
