CAIRO – During his fourth visit since taking office in 2022, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh is in Cairo for bilateral discussions with his Egyptian counterpart, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
In their meeting on Thursday, the leaders agreed to transform their bilateral relations into a strategic partnership.
Key topics on the agenda included security issues and the exemption of visa requirements for holders of Somali diplomatic passports.
“This signifies a new chapter in our collaboration, focusing on education, security, trade, and enhancing our bilateral cooperation,” President Hassan remarked.
“I discussed a range of regional issues and developments with my esteemed brother, President Hassan Sheikh, particularly the security and political situations in the Horn of Africa, as well as the security dynamics of the Red Sea. We concurred on the need to intensify our efforts to uphold peace and security in this critical region, which has implications for global stability,” Sisi stated.
This visit followed President Hassan’s trip to Addis Ababa last week, which aimed to normalize relations between two neighboring countries in the Horn of Africa. This initiative came after an agreement to cooperate was reached during a Turkish-brokered summit in Ankara, where the Ankara Declaration was signed.
