What is “Barni” about?
“Barni” tells a gripping story set in a small Somali village. It all starts when a 9-year-old girl suddenly disappears during a wedding party. Her 18-year-old sister, Amina, bravely decides she must find her. Along with her friends Hirsi and Geedi, Amina travels to the city on a difficult and emotional search for her little sister.
A Truly Somali Production
This 90-minute film is 100% Somali. It’s in the Somali language and was beautifully shot in Djibouti.
The film was written by Mohamed Sheikh, a Somali filmmaker based in the US, who based the story on memories from his own community, giving it a very real and authentic feel. It was produced by Abdirahman Fiili, and the talented cast and crew are almost all Somalis from Djibouti. This makes the film a wonderful mix of creativity from across the Horn of Africa.
