The Federal Government of Somalia has formally nominated a new Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, underscoring Mogadishu’s continued emphasis on strengthening strategic bilateral relations with Riyadh.

According to an official request letter submitted to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and dated 11 December 2025, Mr. Mohamed Amin Sheikh Osman has been nominated as Somalia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom, with residence in Riyadh.

Mr. Mohamed Amin, who currently serves as Deputy Director at the Office of the Presidency, was nominated following delays in the approval of a previous request submitted more than three months earlier. That earlier proposal sought the appointment of Ambassador Omar Idris Sheikh Ali, who had previously been designated to serve in Eritrea.

The correspondence further notes that Ambassador Mohamed Amin will succeed Ambassador Aweys Haji Yusuf, who was recently appointed as National Security Advisor to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The appointment comes amid a period of internal administrative restructuring within the Presidency over recent months, during which several senior officials, including Mr. Mohamed Amin, were temporarily suspended before being reinstated.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is increasingly prioritizing the placement of trusted and experienced officials in key diplomatic missions abroad, particularly in strategically important partner countries. Saudi Arabia is viewed as a critical ally in Somalia’s foreign policy, a significance reflected in the recent series of high-level diplomatic appointments related to the Kingdom.

The nomination is expected to further reinforce Somalia–Saudi Arabia relations across political, economic, and security cooperation frameworks.
