MOGADISHU, Somalia — As the threat from the Al-Shabaab militant group continues to escalate, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre convened an emergency security meeting on Friday, gathering key ministers and top security officials to discuss urgent measures to address growing security concerns, particularly in the capital, Mogadishu.

The meeting came in response to an alarming surge in Al-Shabaab activity, with militants seen halting vehicles along the key route between Mogadishu and the town of Afgoye in the Lower Shabelle region. This action has raised fears of expanding attacks in the region, further destabilizing the capital and its surrounding areas.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Barre instructed officials to swiftly formulate a comprehensive strategy that would neutralize the immediate threat posed by Al-Shabaab. He emphasized the need for urgent and coordinated action to ensure the safety of civilians, while also focusing on the swift elimination of militant activity in areas surrounding Mogadishu.

“The challenge we face is serious, and it requires a united front,” Barre said. “It is vital that we strengthen the cooperation between our security forces, intelligence agencies, and local communities. Only through this synergy can we hope to neutralize the terrorist threat effectively.”

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of involving local communities in the fight against Al-Shabaab, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. He highlighted that the role of civilians in identifying threats and collaborating with authorities is essential in creating a safer environment across Somalia.

“We must work together to protect our nation. The security of our citizens is paramount, and each individual has a role to play in this battle,” Barre added.

The Somali government has ramped up efforts to combat the Al-Shabaab insurgency, which has plagued the country for over a decade. Al-Shabaab, an extremist group linked to Al-Qaeda, has been responsible for numerous attacks across the region, including bombings, assassinations, and ambushes.

As the security situation remains volatile, the Somali government continues to rely on both military operations and community engagement to drive Al-Shabaab out of its strongholds and restore stability to the nation.
