In the Hodan District Headquarters of Mogadishu, the sound of musical celebration is about to fill the air once again. Hayaan Heritage, in partnership with the Somali National Youth Council, is set to host the highly anticipated Mogadishu Music Festival, a vibrant celebration of rhythm, heritage, and hope dedicated to showcasing Somalia’s dynamic music scene and promoting creativity and youth empowerment.

The event, scheduled for early August, is expected to be one of the most significant cultural gatherings in recent years. Its timing coincides with the holiday season, when many artists and members of the Somali diaspora return home. Organizers aim to bring together 20 Somali singers representing the country’s diverse regions and musical styles, all sharing a single stage for live performances. The festival will feature both contemporary and traditional musical genres, including but not limited to Shareero, Dhaanto, Buraanbur, Ciyaaro Dhaqameed (folklore dances), and Sharax. Music inspired by Afrobeat will also be highlighted as a symbolic bridge between generations, reviving the soul of Somali music while inspiring a new era of cultural pride among the youth.

At the heart of the Mogadishu Music Festival is a deep reverence for Somali heritage. Beyond its lineup of performers, the event will showcase 10 traditional Somali musical instruments, offering attendees a rare opportunity to experience the authentic sounds that have historically resonated through Somali homes, markets, and celebrations.

From the rhythmic Kaban to the soul-stirring beats of the Durbaan, each instrument will carry melodies of expression and emotion. Their inclusion is not merely ceremonial; it is a deliberate effort to reconnect younger generations with the musical heritage that has long defined Somali culture.

“The Mogadishu Music Festival will become an annual gathering. This year’s slogan is ‘Youth and Culture,’ and we want to encourage the younger generation to preserve their cultural heritage in this modern era,” said Abdiwahab Ahmed, founding director of Hayaan Heritage.
